Since launching last month, WhyTheyreSingle.com has spotlighted some of the funniest and most unusual material from Internet dating sites. The site catalogues the bizarre and hilarious adventures of dating in the digital age by publishing user-submitted screenshots and emails, offering laughs and more than a little anthropological insight into modern romantic interaction.

Which one of the following actually appeared on an Internet dating site? (1) A profile picture of a young man brandishing his giant broadsword. (2) A dating ad proposing a “Threesome with my Realdoll™.” (3) A description of one man’s perfect match as “A real rednack woman that wood like to have kids [sic].” In fact, all three did.

These are only a few of the profile images and dating emails submitted by online daters to WhyTheyreSingle.com, a new website dedicated to spotlighting the funniest and most unusual material from dating sites worldwide. Why They’re Single launched last month with a series called "The Seven Habits of Highly Ineffective Online Daters," and received 20,000 page views on its first day. It has since spread rapidly through social media to a global audience with visitors from more than 80 countries.

If the anonymous nature of the Internet serves to amplify the awkwardness of dating, the proof is at WhyTheyreSingle.com. From mainstream sites like Match.com to niche services like Tattooed Singles, dating sites contain a treasury of pickup lines, profile photos, and personal statements that reflect all the variety and strangeness of romantic interaction in the digital age. Submissions of “the best and (mostly) worst” material from these websites have been flowing into WhyTheyreSingle.com, where they are published daily and sorted into categories like "Spel Check," “Kinky Time” or “Creepers.”

A fan of the website, Professor Ryan Adams of the Sociology/Anthropology Department at Lycoming College, notes that scholars have observed the shifting dynamics of courtship since the advent of online dating. “People are acting very strangely and while this pattern is recognized by both scholars and those engaged in online dating, it is not nearly hilarious enough in the scholarly literature, at least in proportion to how profoundly weird people are being.”

“The emergence of WhyTheyreSingle.com,” Professor Adams said, “is both welcome and significant for anyone who wants to know more about the nature of modern courtship in reference to general online culture, web-based ethnography, or courtship and gender in the 21st Century. Plus, it is really funny. LOL.”

Dating sites are a unique reflection of the games people play to get romantic attention, and some of the material out there is priceless. Why They’re Single is designed to feature and preserve these gems, like a museum for all the best and (mostly) worst that online dating has to offer.
