VSM: How important is availability compared to performance?
DD: You can’t have one without the other. And any solution that increases one while taxing the other is no solution at all. Availability is crucial because when the caching service fails, the application may be off the air, or suffer degraded performance as data is fetched from slower media. Schooner's Membrain product solves this problem by including full and immediate synchronous replication between Membrain servers, with immediate failover if one is taken down for maintenance or because of a hardware failure.
