Cleantech startup Connora Technologies has initiated the commercialization of its Recyclamine™ Epoxy Hardener Series. This patented technology can be used with any epoxy resin system to create, for the first time, fully recyclable composites. Recyclamine™ transforms the manufacture of epoxy composites from a growing burden on the environment into a solution that is economically viable and ecologically sound.
Epoxy is a remarkably versatile plastic classified as a thermosetting plastic (or thermoset). Renowned for their lightweight strength, thermosets are the workhorse of the global composite industry and widely used in applications ranging from sporting goods to energy and transportation. While well suited for the cost effective manufacturing of composites, thermoset-based composites could not be fully recycled - until now.
“Our goal at Connora Technologies is to transform the way in which the composite manufacturing industry views recycling,” says Dr. Stefan Pastine, Connora’s Founder and CTO. “Instead of using a conventional cradle-to-grave approach, which typically manages production and end-of-life waste, we have conceptualized a new cradle-to-cradle solution by tackling the problem at the product’s creation. It boils down to solving a fundamental design problem. We have re-engineered the molecular design of the plastic itself.”
Instead of ending their lives unproductively and compromising the environment in a landfill or an incinerator, future composites manufactured with Recyclamine™ hardeners can be converted back into their base components using a proprietary, low energy recycling method. These valuable components can then be re-sold, re-used or repurposed.
