The Department of General Services (DGS) gathered to salute their Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) interns for their great work and dedication.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 21, 2013

Recently, the Department of General Services (DGS) gathered to salute their Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) interns for their great work and dedication. The SYEP interns started their summer internship at DGS on July 1st and worked till August 8th. The Summer Youth Employment Program is all about connecting youth with job opportunities within the District. DGS has proudly been partnering with SYEP since our creation in October 2011.

This year youth had the opportunity to be gain work experience and improve their professional etiquette working side by side with DGS management and through a special program offered by our partners this summer at ARS Consulting. Summer interns attended a diverse set of workshops and group sessions that were designed to help them grow professionally as well as personally. The interns spoke about the wonderful time they had during the STEM Career Day Challenge, which focused on exposing youth to the vast possibilities within the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Some interns also spoke about the mental transformation they had working their first job, how it was very different from what they had expected, but that they made the proper adjustments to become a professional as well as a contributing asset to their team.

While this was a day to celebrate the youth, we also wanted to give special thanks to all of their supervisors for the hard work that goes into running an internship program while also fulfilling their own work responsibilities. Three DGS supervisors received “Special Recognition” awards for their special dedication to their summer youth and their professional development. These supervisors are as follows:

Lastly, interns were invited to apply for fall internships being offered by Logistics Systems Incorporated, Metro Data Networks, LLC and First Financial Group. Each internship opportunity would offer interns continued professional development, personal growth and a stipend.

DGS is thankful for our interns this summer and SYEP program that affords DC youth the opportunity to develop not only professionally but personally into young adults prepared for their first full-time job. It is through programs like SYEP that the next generation of leaders and decision makers will be developed for the District and the world over.
