Roundtable Information:
Virtual Strategy Magazine is pleased to continue the VSM Roundtable Series where our members and readers can have their questions answered. The topic this month is "Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity"
This months roundtable was lead by Brian Ducharme, Managing Editor of VSM.
Podcast Summary:
I imagine that my company is not alone in not having a DR/BC plan in place. I know that this could be potentially dangerous considering the floods in the last couple of years but getting funding approved for DR is not likely at all. What strategies do you find are the most cost effective? What points should I use to persuade my company this is a worthwhile expense?
Do you think Virtualization is a disruptive technology? In a positive or negative way? Many companies are reporting great successes with implementing Virtualization to support their DR efforts. Are you hearing these same sentiments of success from your customers?
What should be considered when determining whether to keep DR in-house or when outsourcing it to a Disaster Recovery service provider would be more effective?
I'm doing a research on Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity; I would like to know more about security measures for server rooms, the best strategy for disaster recovery, and the best layout for the server room.
We have a warm offsite location for our datacenter but as far as I know we have never tested our DR plan. Do you have an idea what our odds of success are if we ever did try to test it?

Data393, a Colorado-based managed IT infrastructure and hosting provider, has constructed an efficient and cost-effective solution for backup and recovery needs with its enterprise strength SecureData service. This disk-based backup solution is built on EMC's proven Axion software to provide ironclad data protection assurances. SecureData can transfer up to 20 GB of data per hour, allowing large backup jobs to be handled in a single window. Compared to traditional tape systems, SecureData lowers the impact on operating infrastructure by reducing server overhead and bandwidth utilization. When SecureData performs an initial backup, it makes a complete image of the data, which, in traditional tape backup terms, is a full backup. Then using a patented process called commonality factoring, SecureData transfers only new or modified data from the infrastructure to Data393’s redundant disk arrays, thus eliminating the need to manage full and incremental backup strategies. Scalent software lets you rapidly repurpose servers. Using Scalent software, you can transition your data center between different configurations or from bare metal to live, connected servers in five minutes or less, without physical intervention or infrastructure changes. With Scalent software you can rack your physical environment once and then reconfigure and repurpose the underlying infrastructure as needed.
Our customers have deployed Scalent software to automate the re-provisioning and fail-over of servers in production, leveraged DR infrastructure for non-production test and development, and created shared enterprise test labs from which resources are dynamically provisioned to end users as needed.
