AppStream joins Altiris Developer Program to combine application streaming technology with software virtualization
SALT LAKE CITY – Oct. 4, 2006- /Virtual Strategy Magazine/ – Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a pioneer of service-oriented management solutions, today announced that AppStream, a leader in on-demand application deployment, has joined the Altiris® Developer Program. AppStream has optimized its technology to be compatible with Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution™ technology, the combination of which delivers virtualized, on-demand application delivery and management.
IT organizations can now use AppStream 5.1 to provide instant delivery and activation of applications virtualized by Altiris® SVS™ software. SVS software eliminates conflicts between applications and does not alter the Windows installation, while AppStream technology provides efficient and flexible streaming to deliver on-demand applications to the desktop. The combination of SVS with AppStream technology offers IT organizations:
Increased control of software environments
More efficient service with true on-demand application delivery
Flexibility to quickly move users and applications between computers
Reduced software license costs
Reduced testing and help desk costs through conflict-free software operations
Streaming is becoming an integral component of the application virtualization market segment which is predicted to grow significantly over the next 12 - 24 months, according to Andi Mann, Enterprise Management Associates senior analyst. Mann said, “Streaming is an instantaneous delivery mechanism that complements software virtualization. Streaming combined with the ability to virtualize applications is a powerful combination for software management and control.”
Some of the benefits of software virtualization and streaming include:
Elimination of software conflicts
Instantaneous software repair
Application migration in days versus months
Desktop lockdown with maintained end-user productivity
Efficient software license control
“Software streaming and virtualization are complementary technologies that serve two very different but additive functions to improve software management and the enterprise computing experience,” said Steve Morton, Altiris VP of product management and marketing. “Integrated technologies from Altiris and AppStream solve the most pressing software ownership issues today while setting the stage for the creation of dynamic computing environments.”
Brad Rowland, AppStream VP of worldwide marketing, said, “As virtualization moves to the desktop, we are excited to offer a unique approach with Altiris. Both companies share customer-focused and standards-based design philosophies resulting in award-winning technologies. Together, we offer an even more powerful solution to solve a very real set of problems. This is another step forward in our vision to remove barriers to computing resources and information for enterprise customers.”
Altiris Software Virtualization Solution creates a portable, virtual software package that can be instantly activated and deactivated on an end-user system. Unlike other application virtualization technologies, Altiris technology protects the client operating system, eliminates software conflicts and minimizes support calls while maintaining normal application behavior and end-user experience. Combined with streaming, Altiris software virtualization improves end-user productivity while substantially reducing the daily burden on IT to maintain applications.
AppStream 5.1 provides an on-demand delivery platform for SVS software. Integration between AppStream and SVS technologies provides the latest method to track, monitor and restrict applications from a central location. In addition, software license agreement compliance can now be automated. This integration also simplifies and streamlines patch and software update delivery for IT organizations while making the process seamless for end users.
The Altiris service-oriented management architecture is open for development by Altiris Developer Program partners. AppStream is one of the first to leverage open Altiris APIs to optimize AppStream 5.1 for compatibility with Altiris SVS software.
